Standard normal table
Z Table: Standard Normal Table with Area Lookup
Type a z-score to get the area to its left, to its right, between −z and z, and in both tails, with the matching cell highlighted in the tables below. Type an area to find its z-score. Both tables print on letter paper.
Area to the left: 0.9750
In the positive table: row 1.9, column .06. Areas are rounded to four decimals.
z for an area of 0.95
- Area to the left = 0.9500: z = 1.6449
- Area to the right = 0.9500: z = -1.6449
- Central area (confidence level) = 0.9500: z = ±1.9600

Every value is calculated in your browser from the standard normal distribution (Marsaglia’s series for Φ) and rounded to four decimals; the tables were checked cell by cell against an independent calculation. These tables give the area to the left of z. Some textbooks, including the NIST handbook, print the area from 0 to z instead, which is the left area minus 0.5 for positive z.
How to read the z table
Find the row for the first two digits of z (the ones place and the tenths) and the column for the hundredths. The cell is the area under the standard normal curve to the left of z. For z = 1.96, go to row 1.9 and column .06 to read 0.9750. For a negative z such as −1.23, use the negative table, row −1.2 and column −.03: 0.1093.
- Area to the right of z = 1 − area to the left.
- Area between two z-scores = the larger left area − the smaller left area.
- Two-tailed area for ±z = 2 × the area to the right of |z|.
Finding z for an area
Type an area in Find z for an area. A left-tail area of 0.95 gives z = 1.6449, and a central area of 0.95 (a 95% confidence level) gives z = ±1.9600. In the printed table, look for the area closest to the one you need and read the row and column back.
A z table you can search
The negative table covers z from −3.99 to 0.00 and the positive table from 0.00 to 3.99, each with four-decimal areas to the left of z. The lookup gives the same values for any z between −8 and 8, along with the right-tail, central and two-tailed areas, and shades them on a normal curve.
Left-area tables and other formats
This table is cumulative: each value is the area from the far left of the curve up to z. Other books use the area from 0 to z (the NIST handbook does) or the area to the right of z. If your class uses one of those, subtract 0.5 from a positive left area or take 1 minus the left area.

A t table for 1 to 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120 and 1000 degrees of freedom and seven significance levels, plus a calculator for any df and α.
Chi-Square Table: Critical Values with P-Value
A chi-square table for 1 to 30 and 40 to 100 degrees of freedom and ten right-tail areas, plus a calculator for the critical value and the p-value of a statistic.

How to Read a Z Table (Left-Tail Areas, Step by Step)
Learn to read a standard normal z table: find the row and column, get left-tail, right-tail and between-two-values areas, and handle other table layouts.
Z-Score Formula and Worked Examples
Use the z-score formula z = (x − μ) / σ, read what the sign and size mean, convert a z-score to a percentile, and handle sample means with σ/√n.
Sample vs Population Standard Deviation (n vs n − 1)
Know when to divide by n and when to divide by n − 1, with the formulas, a worked data set, the link to variance, and the mistakes that cost points.
Mean, Median and Mode: Definitions, Examples and Which to Use
Find the mean, median and mode of a data set, see how one outlier moves each one, and decide which measure of center to report for your data.
T Table vs Z Table: Which One to Use and How to Read It
Decide between the t table and z table, find degrees of freedom, read one-tailed and two-tailed columns, and see why t values approach z as df grows.
How to Read a Chi-Square Table (df, Critical Values, p-Values)
Find degrees of freedom for goodness-of-fit and independence tests, read right-tail critical values, and compare them with your chi-square statistic.
A few helpful answers
Before you begin.
How do I read a z table?
Use the row for the ones and tenths of z and the column for the hundredths. The cell is the area to the left of z. For z = 1.96 the area is 0.9750.
How do I find the area to the right of z?
Subtract the left area from 1. For z = 1.96 the right area is 1 − 0.9750 = 0.0250.
What z-score goes with 95% confidence?
z = ±1.96 for a central area of 95%. For 90% it is ±1.645 and for 99% it is ±2.576.
Why does my textbook table show different numbers?
Some tables give the area from 0 to z instead of the area to the left. For a positive z, subtract 0.5 from this table’s value to convert.
Can I print the z table?
Yes. Press Print the z tables for the negative and positive tables on separate letter pages.
How accurate are the values?
They are calculated to double precision and rounded to four decimals. All 800 table cells were checked against an independent calculation.
